Job Description

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a lead electrical engineer in the electrical power distribution department at the Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor operation. Lead Electrical Engineers are afforded countless unique opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills they've acquired throughout their career experience to date and use those skills to develop solutions and implement projects that improve the process and focus on providing electrical distribution system expertise. A successful candidate will provide leadership in ensuring that work is performed safely to efficiently produce and deliver quality steel products to our customers.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Possess the ability to work effectively within a team environment, utilizing clear and effective communication skills.
  • Be available 24/7 to diagnose and troubleshoot programming and electrical issues.
  • Recommend and/or perform predictive, preventative, and emergency maintenance on equipment.
  • Resolve equipment malfunctions, including those requiring scheduled shutdowns or breakdown action.
  • Analyze and interpret blueprints, schematics, and drawings of electrical systems.
  • Work closely with operations, engineering, maintenance, and other technical resources to drive results.
  • Manage the planning, scheduling, and cost controlling of maintenance and engineering projects.
  • Manage technical aspects of assigned projects in accordance with customer contract requirements, budget, and production schedule.
  • Seek methods or procedures that reduce costs and/or increase production efficiencies.
  • Analyze current operating performance and standard operating procedures and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Monitor the electrical work of external contractors for the purpose of ensuring that projects are satisfactorily completed in a timely manner.
  • Supervise a crew of hourly maintenance employees, and uphold and enforce safety, environmental, job procedures, and maintain general discipline of the crew.
  • Communicate with upstream and downstream operations and non-Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. contractors to coordinate work, deliveries, and service.
  • Various other duties, as needed, to support the business.



Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degreein Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience.
  • Proven communication (verbal and written), analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a hot, dusty environment. Climbing stairs, ladders, and walking inclines.Able to work/walk safely on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to perform duties on different shifts for a multi-level organization which operates 24/7.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of electrical engineering experience in steel mill, manufacturing, process, production, or equivalent facility.
  • Maintenance background with steel industry experience.
  • Experience in electrical power generation, load flows, and distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of industrial wiring, controls, and instrumentation.
  • Basic understanding of pumping systems and how to interpret pump performance curves.
  • Basic understanding of reading, troubleshooting, and writing ladder logic.
  • Basic understanding of PID loops and control.
  • Basic understanding of PLCs, AC/DC drives, and HMI setup, programming, and configuration.
  • Knowledge of safety and health policies including key components of the OSHA regulations.
