Job Description

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opportunity for a Quality Design Engineer at our Burns Harbor Plate Mill operation. The Quality Design Engineer is responsible for supporting the daily quality activities including order setup, inspection, testing, ensuring quality system compliance, reduction of waste/non-conforming material, and metallurgical product improvement to make the highest quality steel. The ideal candidate will have prior steel industry experience, be self-motivated, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex operations.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • As part of the Quality Team, work closely with operations, engineering, maintenance, and other technical resources to drive results and improvement in the quality metrics.
  • Possess the ability to work effectively within a team environment, utilizing clear and effective communication skills.
  • Provide metallurgical and technical support for product and process improvement through data analysis, problem-solving, metallurgical and mechanical concepts, and knowledge of customer operations and markets.
  • Support the order design and review activities including approving incoming new orders, setting product capabilities, changing/improving existing order process designs, and creating/following product trials.
  • Provide technical solutions and material selection recommendations for internal and external customers by understanding manufacturing and product capability.
  • Reviews customer specifications/requirements and develops and implements the product chemistry and manufacturing recipes necessary to satisfy those requirements.
  • Aids field sales personnel in the resolution of any major quality issues.
  • Regularly communicates customer problems to management and the workforce.
  • Assists in the development of corrective actions.
  • Reviews the mill's quality performance and assists in continuous improvement.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Science or equivalent working experience.
  • Five (5) years of previous experience in an industrial, or related environment.
  • Working knowledge of plate metallurgical principals and steel defect origins.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be familiar with the Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to operate effectively within a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years experience in hot rolling/plate process.
  • Working knowledge of plate products and customer specifications, especially API.
  • Demonstrated success in defining and resolving problems.
  • Strong analytical skills.
