Job Description

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Health and Safety Specialist at our Burns Harbor, IN operation. The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for providing leadership, counsel, and acting as an effective facilitator to influence the development of a proactive approach to safety and health.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Act as a coach and mentor to line managers and supervisors in Safety leadership and assist them in executing their Safety responsibilities.
  • Sustain existing management systems (ISO 45001) to ensure the effective execution of the Safety and Health Plan.
  • Drive injury/fatality prevention and hazard assessment efforts and activities.
  • Provide technical expertise in new equipment/facilities development by actively participating in Project Safety and Health reviews, audits, and internal self-assessments.
  • Utilize and instruct others in the Cleveland-Cliffs Steel Safety and Health program, protocols, and criteria, by conducting safety audits and departmental safety observations.
  • Provide technical expertise and participate in injury/incident investigations to identify root cause analysis and provide recommendations to prevent a recurrence.
  • Maintain technical expertise and counsel management on applicable Local, State, Federal, and Corporate Health and Safety regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health Safety Engineering or significant experience in the field of safety.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), team building, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated with minimal direction required for day-to-day operations.
  • Excellent PC skills, including Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, and POWERPOINT.
  • 3 years' experience in a safety and health position.
  • Some shift and weekend work is required.
  • Willing and able to work nights, weekends and/or holidays when on call or during extended outages.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Successful track record working with a represented workforce in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of Safety and Health policies including key components of the OSHA Regulations.
  • Understanding of ISO 45001 certification requirements.
  • Management system internal audit experience.
  • 5+years of experience in an industrial safety and health position.
