Process Engineer

South Bend, IN

The Process Engineer will have responsibilities that can range within all areas of process engineering including process improvement, new product introduction, technology transfer, process design, capital projects, productivity improvements, equipment commissioning and startup.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Project and process engineering (productivity, cost reduction, product consistency, etc.)skills/experience.Provides leadership in the planning of chemical process design and execution of capital expansion projects aligned with company goals. This will include commissioning and documentation of new and existing facilities.

  • Optimize existing processes to provide consistently uniform, high quality products at the lowest cost. Conceptualize improvement ideas, manage the project funnel, and develop attainable projects that deliver sustainable safety, quality, and productivity improvements to the site. Consider the use of innovative new process technology.

  • Manage assigned projects, completing them on time and within budget. Utilize ERP system (Adage / SAP) to collect data and manage projects.

  • Direct support personnel and contractors as needed to complete projects.

  • Provides guidance and leadership to regional process engineers, operations, and R&D personnel in areas of process design, capital execution, process improvement, and technology development.

  • Communicate effectively by written reports and informal contacts to ensure all appropriate personnel are aware of project status.

  • Lead, facilitate and/or participate in structured problem solving methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing). Has the ability to analyze and interpret data; should be able to propose hypotheses as explanations of phenomena, and design experimental studies to test (disprove) these hypotheses.

  • Oversee training of process and plant personnel for new equipment. Involved in training plant and operations personnel in new process technology, and write standard operating procedures for new equipment and process methods. Ensure proper design/safety reviews are conducted and proper management of change procedures are adhered.

  • Improve plant equipment to minimize repairs and downtime.

  • Fully support facility safety program and actively contribute to continuous improvement of facility safety performance.

  • Manage plant systems to maximize employee safety and minimize environmental risk. Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and assist the HBF EHS representative.

  • Interact with other departments to provide the highest level of teamwork and cooperation between groups.

  • Assure facility compliance with all ISO 9001:2000 requirements.

  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering.

  • Process engineering experience with specialty chemicals, adhesives or related industry

  • Experience as a lead project engineer and leading contractors as part of the team.

  • MS Office experience- Excel, Word, PowerPoint

  • Experience in general plant safety. Knowledge of confined space entry, lockout/tag out, and process safety management

Preferred Requirements

  • 3+ years process engineering experience with specialty chemicals, adhesives or related industry

  • Experience in a PSM-regulated environment.

  • Demonstrated process improvement competency. Demonstrated success in utilizing Six Sigma and LEAN manufacturing techniques and tools.

  • CAD, Statistical Software, PowerBi experience and general knowledge of computer hardware configurations, PLCs and HMIs

  • Experience in basic statistical process control, design of experiments and ISO quality systems. Ability to present root cause analyses and solutions.

  • Experience working in a Union facility.

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, and geographic location.

The salary for this role is $79,800 - $105,000.
